Parking is currently a major problem. As the number of vehicles on the road increases, there comes the need to make greater use of modern technologies that are able to address the situation effectively and react in real time. One example of use in the future is the implementation of an intelligent parking management system in urban parking zones. This solution is a “Smart City” service and therefore ranks alongside other systems designed to improve the quality of human life. It will not only help drivers, but will also significantly reduce the environmental burden.

SPEL successfully completed the testing of a unique system for managing the occupancy of parking spaces using intelligent computer vision, a solution that draws on the CertiConVis system. The system is able to record and evaluate available parking spaces and the movement of vehicles within the monitored area in real time using analysis from CCTV footage. So far, the system has been tested on two frequented parking areas (and elsewhere).

The system was first implemented at the truck stop in Dobšice on the D11 motorway, where the occupancy of nine stands for trucks and trucks-and-trailers was assessed using a CCTV system. The system achieved a success rate of 98%, both in an evaluation of the occupancy of the area and in recognising the size of the means of transport parked there.
